Students at First Academy come from different backgrounds, but one thing in common is their passion for digital arts. Let’s get close and personal with…

Jubs Raposon

jubs raposon

WHO IS JUBS RAPOSON?
I’m Jubs Raposon, 23 years old; I’ve been in creative field for almost 4 years. 2 years as Sets and Events Designer for GMA Network and 1 year freelance and 1 year as a Resident Graphic Designer in Globe Telecom. I have a Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts Major in Advertising Arts at Far Eastern University. Whenever I have time I used to go to the gym, I’m obsessed about being physically fit, I do Boxing, MMA, Running and Biking.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A DIGITAL ARTIST?
Back when I was a kid, elementary days, my leisure time is to draw anime and to construct Zoids. I remember the time that I beg for my parents to buy me clean, thick sheet of bond papers so I can copy the anime character from my collection of teks. One of my all-time favorite is Dragon Ball. It’s really challenging for me that time to copy Gokou and Gohan Super Saiyan hair since it has a lot of different layer of edges and it challenged my eyes. I think that’s my fundamental of arts and the reason I pursued Fine Arts in FEU. My degree really masters my skill in design, traditional and digital art.

WHY FACA? WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR COURSE?
FACA is one of the best schools of Digital Arts in the country, they know what the art industry needs today, they also have respected professors. They’re not just teaching design technicalities and process, they follow trends pitch new ideas and build great Digital Artists. I believe that having a Web Design course in this organization will fulfill my career in Design. I’m proud being one of their students.

FAVE SUBJECT HERE AT FACA? WHY?
I only enrolled in the Web Design class but I think I prefer the School as whole. They are accommodating and friendly.

WHAT’S THE LAST MOVIE YOU SAW? HOW WAS IT?
The Revenant. I watched the movie twice. At first, I’m intrigued on what the story is all about. Then after that I’m on cinematography, animation, music and Production. To those who don’t have any idea about the movie, The Revenant depicts the struggle of a man to survive. This is also where Leonardo De Carpio won his first Oscar.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WATERING HOLE OR RESTAURANT?
My favorite bars are Tides, Prime, Guilly’s, when it comes to food I love Maginhawa Street it’s all in Quezon City. I’m from the  South but I do enjoy going to the North. Quezon City is known for a hippie culture with cheap foods and drinks that’s why me and my friends prefer the place.

WHAT’S THE LAST GREAT BOOK YOU READ?
The book is called “Ways to be a Freelance Graphic Designer”. It’s a gift of my former IS back in GMA Network. , well it’s not a “great” book or anything with deep words and heavy grammar. As the title sounds, the book will help you to be a good Freelance Designer.  This book helps me to keep calm, helps me look at the bigger picture, keep my goals on track and pursue my dreams one at a time.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
To be successful in this field is what inspires me today. It’s also the main reason why I keep on studying this field. I’ve been in a scenario back in student days where a lot of people where judging the career I pursue. They look Fine Arts student as a jobless course, a course without ambition. I want to prove to them that regardless of field you will take as long as you have passion on what you do, you will succeed.

WHAT IS ONE THING I WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT ME?
I don’t talk a lot, I’m a good listener and a keeper of secrets.

DO YOU CRITIQUE YOUR OWN WORK? EXPLAIN.
Yes, as always. You’re the first QA of your work. Design is different from Art in the perspective that designs need to get feedback or approval from a client. Unlike Fine Art that you just need to please yourself.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO GET INTO YOUR CREATIVE ZONE?
I always start the morning with exercise and a good coffee, that way I feel energetic the whole day. Getting in the creative zone means that you’re mentally prepared for a long day of creative stuff. I dose myself with coffee when the projects are tough as expected. Good music also boosts up my creative juices.

DO YOU COLLECT ANYTHING?
I do have a collection of different shoes and clothes. I love to wear trendy clothes, that way I feel more comfortable to be with other people. I don’t want them to feel that I’m different from them because of the way I dress.

Helena Prudenciado and Arlene Prudenciado

helena2

WHO IS HELENA PRUDENCIADO?

I’m Helena Grace U. Prudenciado, 19 years old, a student and I have Autism Spectrum Disorder. My hobbies are Drawing, Writing, playing Piano, and Singing.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO BE A DIGITAL ARTIST?

Because I am good at art and it’s gonna be my job for the future

LAST MOVIE YOU SAW?

Furious 7, it is good and it has animated effects as well.

FAVORITE BOOK?

Geronimo Stilton books, I love the illustrations.

ADVICE TO ASPIRING ARTISTS?

That a person with autism can be anything. Just like Zootopia’s motto, Anyone can be Anything.

DO YOU CRITIQUE YOUR WORK?

Yes, because I want to make sure everything is perfect.

WHO IS ARLENE PRUDENCIADO?

I am 54 years old, married and have two daughters, currently working in a law Firm specializing in Intellectual Property. I love reading either materials related to my work or those easy to read books that my children have in their collections. For my leisure time, I love listening to music, singing and playing the guitar.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR DAUGHTER.

My daughter Helena is 19, very artistic, loves to draw, write stories and plan themes for parties. She is a voracious reader- she likes to read books on fantasy, also history and science. She knows the bible more than most adults. She started drawing at the age of 3 and by 3 1/2, she was drawing perspective views. She has an impressive visual memory. At age 3 she was able to identify all the flags of the world. She made her first mini book with illustrations and a short novel at the age of 15.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE FIRST ACADEMY?

I chose FACA for her because she has special needs, she being on the Autism Spectrum. We want her to be able to hone her skills at the fastest time that she could without being bound to traditional school setting which apparently is not working for her at this time. Also, I like the fact that a counselor is always ready to assist when she needs assistance and that the counselor is there to chart or monitor her progress and provide other venues for learning like on the job training and tutorials.

DID YOU SEE YOUR DAUGHTER IMPROVE HER ARTISTRY?

Yes, I saw a big improvement in her work. Aside from that, she is now able to use other applications in the digital field.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE BONDING ACTIVITY?

Our favorite bonding activity is taking trips to different parts of the Philippines, watching movies and our Friday prayer time.

WHERE DO YOU THINK YOUR DAUGHTER GET HER CREATIVE TALENT?

She got her creative talent from her father’s side. Her father, a mechanical engineer is proficient with technical drawings.

ANY ADVICE TO FELLOW PARENTS WHO SEE POTENTIAL IN THEIR CHILDREN TO BE ARTISTS?

To parents whose children show artistic skills , my advise is to support them and give them the opportunity to hone their talents. In a society where the standard of intelligence is still measured by academic excellence, we as parents are the best advocate for our artistic children.

Vincent Pableo

vincent-pableo

WHO IS VINCENT PABLEO?
I’m Vincent Pableo, 27 yrs old, and I’m currently working at ImFree as a front-end developer. My hobbies are building plastic models, playing video games / table-top games, reading and doing stuffs using Photoshop.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE SUBJECT?
I liked Photoshop! To me, it was a whole new experience to not just be able to edit photos, but also understand the commonly used tools for editing. The possibility of its usage was near infinite.

LAST MOVIE YOU SAW?
Inside Out. It was a really great experience watching it! The way they portray each emotion was precise and it was really entertaining for all kinds of audiences.

FAVORITE PLACE TO HANG OUT?
Starbucks. Coffee and video games/ table-top games is a good combination.

A RECENT GOOD READ?
The Silmarillion.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
It could be from an interesting project, something awesome that I saw from the internet, and scenery that takes my breath away.

FROM TRAINING TO FINDING WORK, WHAT WAS THE JOURNEY LIKE?
The training itself was really worth it. Aside for the manuals given, I was also able to grasp some insights from the professionals (Instructors) themselves. Finding work after finishing the course was not hard that time since I only got a year of work experience and companies were calling to me almost every single day.

DO YOU CRITIC YOUR OWN WORK?
Yes. It was more on the technicalities rather than the overall impression like I could achieve probably a better result using technique B rather than the technique A. I critique my own work after I made something new, that way I can detect what things that can be improved and things that can be retained.

HOW DO YOU GET CREATIVE?
Mostly I read manga or play video games for a bit since I want to be relaxed and awake when I’m in the zone.

DO YOU COLLECT?
Of course! My current collection is mostly on Gundam plastic models (gunpla for short) and before that I have a small collection Magic: The Gathering cards.

ADVICE TO ASPIRING ARTISTS?
All I can say is try experimenting a lot on your work since the possibilities is almost infinite, and try to deviate a little from the current trends (in web design).

Madelane Lopez

madelane

WHO IS MADELANE?
A mother and a freelance graphic artist. As of now I’m still employed in an engineering firm. I graduated Drafting technology in BSU and I’m working as a Piping designer mainly for powerplant design. It might seem strange that I am pursuing graphic design on the side while I’m still working. I’m doing this because this is something that I want to do, it is something that makes me happy and this is what I want to be- a graphic designer someday. Ever since I was a child, I used to join in several art contests like on-the-spot poster making, painting, portrait, mural, editorial cartooning. Everything started when I was in grade 2. My teacher was looking for someone that she can join in a contest. Nag-pa drawing sya and eventually napili yung gawa ko. I represented my school in district level, but hindi ako nanalo. That made me decide to push and learn more about the arts.

WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A DIGITAL ARTIST?
It was a long process before I pursued becoming a digital artist. When I worked na stop yung pag-pursue ko sa arts kasi yung environment totally different. My work was very technical, puro computation. 2007 ako nag- work and then 2012 I decided to study here at First Academy. But before that, I tried different things kasi I was trying to find out kung ano talaga ang gusto ko. Muntik din ako mag- engineering but thanks to my husband, sya yung nagsabi sa akin na kung ano yung nasa puso ko yun yung pursue ko. Kasi parang I felt napipilitan lang ako sa Engineering kasi yun yung work ko. So nag-isip talaga ako araw-araw ano ba talaga yung gusto ko. Then I made the decision to learn digital arts.

WHY FIRST ACADEMY?
When I decided na mag-aaral na ako, I made my research , I googled about careers and schools on digital arts. I read forums, ads and the like until I read about First Academy. From the name pa lang First Academy I got attracted to it na. It was perfect for me kasi flexible yung schedule and nag-fit sya sa work schedule ko.

WHAT INSPIRES ME?
First God. Second My family. When I had my baby yung creativity ko nabuhay ulit. Sa family ko ako humuhugot ng lakas ng loob, pasensya at lahat na. Third are the people who believe in me.

ANY DIFFICULT PROJECT?
All initial activities in photoshop. Kasi when I entered First Academy as in zero knowledge ako sa mga ituturo. Lahat naman sa una mahirap but when you do it again and again magiging ok na.

YOUR CREATIVE ZONE IS?
A quiet place. Sometimes a dark room mas marami ideas mag- pop up sa isip mo. I also have my notebook and pen para madali ko tandaan ang ideas ko.

ADVICE TO ARTISTS
To those who love arts, keep experimenting, push yourself beyond your comfort zone, keep on innovating. Keep yourself updated. Like me I started only na puro manual lang yung ginagawa ko, I had my doubts kung kakayanin ko, a lot of fears kung worth it ba yung tuition ko, yung time and effort ko. Pero after all these I had no regrets and I can say that I made the right decision.

Christian Ramahenintsoa

WHO IS CHRISTIAN?
I’m originally from France. I’ve been working here four years now in a French company. I recently decided to join this school, because I’ve always been interested in 3D graphics, motion graphics and animation.

WHY FIRST ACADEMY?
I’m working full time in our company and I’m only available during the weekends. I think that this is the only one that is that flexible in terms of schedules.

WHY 3D?
This is what I want to learn. It is not easy to learn it by yourself it is a little difficult. It is better to have guidelines and to have an instructor.

WHAT ARE YOU READING?
I am reading a book named Anatomy for Sculptors.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Whenever I see a drawing, an anime, a game it motivates me to do something also.. to sit in front of the computer and start working on something. I’m really passionate about monsters.

WHAT DIFFICULT ACTIVITY DID YOU ENCOUNTER IN CLASS?
Scriptwriting. We had to write and draw a storyboard and its been a long time since I drew. That one was not easy.

DO YOU CRITIC YOUR OWN WORK?
Always. I’m never satisfied with my own work. But I tell myself to stop otherwise I will never finish it. Whenever I look back at my work, I always see how it could have been done better.

WORDS OF ADVICE TO ASPIRING DIGITAL ARTISTS?
I think they should go for it, if they wanted to do something like that. They should not wait after something like I need to raise money, or I don’t have a computer. I think there is always a way to learn. I remember this French Director who was asked about how to make movies like him and he said “If you want to make movies you just go take a camera and make movies”.

Nika Peji

nika

WHO IS NIKA PEJI?

I am a Fraud analyst at JP Morgan Chase, 22 years old.
I basically love to try new food, like to draw, read books,
Occasionally I also write poems and prose when inspiration
strikes. I can say my mind is an overflowing well of ideas, I cant help but express them via art or words.

WHY BECOME A DIGITAL ARTIST?

Well, art was something I was inclined to do since I was a kid so this decision came
naturally. I took a different course during college and it was very far from what I want.

WHY FIRST ACADEMY?

One counselor back in high school recommended the school to me when I told her I wanted to study arts. I was better with traditional art like freehand drawing I wanted to learn the modern and digital side of it as well and I stumbled upon this cool site, again accidentally after several years, while I was looking for art scholarships I took it as a sign to finally study what I was passionate about . This is definitely one of my best investments. I was lucky to have the opportunity to pursue what I love for a good price.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE SUBJECT?
I’m really interested with character modeling well because it is really challenging it makes me appreciate what 3D animators do more

LAST BOOK READ

I actually read a lot of things, but two of the last books I read that really had an impact was Catch Flow Quadrant by Robert Kiosaki and Secrets of the Millionaire Mind.

ANY DIFFICULT SCHOOL PROJECT?

3D class in its entirety is a challenge for me.

DO YOU CRITIC YOUR WORK?

Actually I do.I think I’m even my own biggest critic. When I don’t like something that I made I take it apart in my mind find what’s wrong with it and look for what and how I can improve.

DO YOU COLLECT?

Lately I buy books about business, finance and investment. But when I was younger I used to collect lots of anime magazines and other graphic novels.
