For any hardcore comic geek and illustration fan, Tony DeZuniga’s name brings chills. He has worked on Marvel characters such as Conan the Barbarian, the X-Men and Thor. He is the co-creator of the long-running DC Comics series Jonah Hex and Black Orchid. He is also a Filipino, and a pioneer artist who helped Filipino talent to become recognized in the US in the 1970s.

Last February 24, 2011, Tony came to First Academy and talked with the new generation of Filipino artists there. Drawing on his vast personal experience, he answered their questions and gave advice on becoming a great comic book artist, able to attain not only fame but also commercial success. He said that Filipino artists are already known in the industry not only because of the visual appeal of their art but also because of their timeliness in delivering what the writers and publishers want. Tony challenged the new artists to always be a step ahead, to continually be learning and to become compelling storytellers.

Afterwards, Tony drew and dedicated a sketch to First Academy as well as autographing comic books and his other illustrations for the participants.

Tony DeZuniga will also be giving a four hour Portfolio Development Workshop for Illustrators at First Academy. For more information, please contact us at 8982724 to 26.
